NetEase Shuts Down MMO Studio Led By Former World of Warcraft Designer

NetEase, the Chinese gaming giant, has announced the closure of its MMO studio led by former World of Warcraft designer, Greg Street. The studio was working on a triple-A fantasy MMO codenamed ‘Ghost’ before the decision to shut down was made.

Greg Street, known for his influential work on World of Warcraft, had founded the studio in 2023 with hopes of creating a groundbreaking MMO experience. However, after just two years of operation, the studio will be shutting down on November 17.

Street, a veteran designer with experience at Riot Games, had joined NetEase to work on the MMO project. Despite efforts to find a publisher for the game, the studio ultimately prioritized helping its developers find employment as the closure became inevitable.

NetEase’s decision to shut down the MMO studio comes as a blow to the gaming industry, especially considering the talent and potential behind the project. As the landscape of game development continues to evolve, the fate of MMOs in the current market remains uncertain.
