Record Number of Referrals to Anti-Terror Programme Raises Concerns
A record number of referrals were made to the government’s anti-terror programme in the year to March 2025, according to recent figures. The data shows that there were 8,778 referrals of individuals to the anti-extremism scheme in 2024/25, which is up 27 from the previous year. This marks the highest number of referrals in a single year since records began 10 years ago.
Interestingly, the data also reveals that far-right extremists now outnumber Islamists in anti-terror programme referrals. In total, 8,778 referrals were made due to suspicions of extremist radicalisation, representing a 27% increase from the previous year.
These figures have raised concerns among experts and officials who monitor extremist activities. The rise in referrals indicates a growing threat of radicalisation within the country and underscores the importance of vigilance in combating extremism.
Efforts to address the issue of radicalisation and extremism are ongoing, with authorities working to identify and intervene with individuals at risk of being radicalised. The record number of referrals highlights the need for continued vigilance and collaboration between government agencies, law enforcement, and communities to prevent extremist ideologies from taking root.
